Tips for Safe Shopping
Use Shoppers Intuition

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is:
  • Do the company's prices seem unusually low?
  • Does the Store have a professional appearance?
  • Are there a lot of spelling or grammar errors?
  • Does the company's phone go unanswered?
  • Post Office Box addresses are always a concern, unless the Store also provides the company's physical address and phone number?
  • Does the company's phone go unanswered?
If any of these or other questions trigger a warning bell in your head, you would be wise to find another online Store.Always Print Out Copies Of Your Store Orders

Print and save records of your online transactions, including the product description and price, the online receipt, and copies of any email you exchange with the seller/Store. Read your credit card statements as you receive them to be on the lookout for unauthorized charges.

Bare Facts - Store Requested Information

When placing an order, there is certain information that you must provide to the Store such as your name and address. Don't answer any question you feel is not required to process your order. Usually the Store will mark which questions that need to be answered with an asterisk (*). Should a Store require information you are not comfortable sharing, leave the Store and find a different Store for the product you seek.

Compare Store Prices

Smart Customers always compare prices. Like today's "brick & mortar stores", varying volume purchases, overhead costs, lower profit margins, etc. Allow different Stores to offer the same product at vastly different prices. You'd be amazed as to how the same product can sell for such a big price difference. Once you've settled upon the Store and the product price you are willing to pay, keep an eye on shipping costs. Shipping costs vary and you need to look at the entire purchase cost (product + shipping) to see if the lowest price Store is really a bargain or not.

Discount Coupons For Stores

Keep an eye open for discount coupons. All Stores offer discounting from time to time. Discounts can be provided for percentages off single products, for volume dollar purchases or offers of free shipping for a period of time. The may be used to clear out inventory, capture market share or take advantage of a specific holidays or seasonal events. If you don't see any obvious discounts or deals call the Store and ask Customer Service if any are available. Sometimes they will provide a Promo Number that you can take advantage of. It's worth the try!

Keep Your Store Passwords Private

Most Stores require the Customer to log-in before placing or viewing an order. The Customer is usually required to provide a username and a password. Never reveal your password to anyone. When selecting a password, do not use commonly known information, such as your birthdates, mother's maiden name, or numbers from your home address, driver's license or Social Security Number. Do not reuse the same password for other sites. The best password has at least eight characters and includes numbers, letters and special characters. Consider one of several software products downloadable (some are free) on the internet as "Password Gorilla" to generate and store your passwords.

Lowest Store Shipping Charges

Once you've settled upon the Store and the product price you are willing to pay, watch those shipping costs. Shipping costs vary and you need to look at the entire purchase cost (product + shipping) to see if the lowest priced Store is really a bargain or not. Always look for free shipping. Look for the price break point where the Store offers free shipping and consider combining product purchases to take advantage of the free shipping offer. Some Stores offer flat shipping fees no matter where you are located. Another factor which influences shipping charges is distance - for example if you are located on the west coast and the Store is on the east coast, you may incur higher shipping charges. Check the shipping charges before you enter your credit card number.

Safest Way To Pay A Store - A Credit Card

The safest way to shop on the Internet is with a credit card. Within the U.S., you are protected under the Fair Credit Billing Act. You have the right to dispute charges on your credit card, and you can withhold payments during a creditor investigation. If it is determined that your credit was used without your authorization, you are only responsible for the first $50 in charges and are rarely asked to pay this charge by the credit card companies. Always review your credit card statement for possible incorrect billing - online or otherwise and:
Never shop online, using cash, cashiers checks, or money orders as you have no protection if you have problems with the purchase, Never use checks, as these can leave you vulnerable to bank fraud. Never use other types of Bank cards, as a debit card, a check card, or an ATM card as these too can leave you vulnerable to bank fraud and you have no legal recourse.
Consider using a "virtual credit card," or single-use card numbers, that can be used at online Stores. Credit Card companies offering these "virtual credit cards" are Citibank (Virtual Accounts Numbers) and Discover card (Secure Online Account Numbers).

Shop At Secure Store Sites

A secure Store Site uses encryption technology to transfer information from your computer to the online merchant's computer. Encryption scrambles the information you send (name, address, credit card number) in order to prevent computer hackers from obtaining it en route. The only computers that can unscramble the code are those that are talking to each other. Ready to purchase that Stores product? The Store asks you to log-in with your password and wants personal identifying information (name, address, credit card number). The Store states you are in a secure session - But how do you tell?
  • First, if you look at the top of your screen where the web site address is displayed, you should see https://. The "s" that is displayed after "http" indicates that web site is secure. Often, you do not see the "s" until you actually move to the order page on the Store's site.
  • Another way to determine if a Store's site is secure is to look for a closed padlock displayed at the bottom of your screen. If that lock is open, you should assume it is not a secure site.
  • The third symbol that indicates you are on a secure Store's site is an unbroken key.
Transmitting your data over secure channels is of little value to you if the Store stores the data unscrambled. You should try to find out if the merchant stores the data in encrypted form. If a hacker is able to intrude, it cannot obtain your credit data and other personal information. Be sure to read the Store's privacy and security policies to learn how it safeguards your personal data on its computers.Shopping At Stores Outside The U.S.

State and Federal consumer laws protect you when you shop within the U.S. You may not get the same protection when shopping at a Store located in another country.

Store Sales Tax Avoidance (for now)

The Internet Tax Freedom Act, passed by Congress, created a 3-year "time-out" or moratorium on taxing the Internet. The sales of goods over the Internet are subject to the rules, much like traditional mail order catalogue companies. This means that a sales tax can only be applied to an item if the company has some kind of physical presence (i.e. a warehouse) in the buyer's state. If you can find a Store located in a different state, then your own, you can avoid these taxes. It will only be a matter of time before this moratorium expires and taxes are collected. So enjoy it today!

Store's Cancellation, Return and Complaint-Handling Policies

The day of the product's arrival, once you remove the outer shipping packaging, verify that the product is the product you ordered. Do Not Open The Original Product Wrapping, as once opened, if the product needs to be returned, many Stores apply a re-stocking or open package charge - especially on electronic products. Find out these Store facts before you purchase:

  • Does the Store post a phone number and/or e-mail address for complaints?
  • How long has the Store been in business?
  • Will they still be around when you need them?
  • Is there an easy, local way for you to get repairs or service?
  • Is there a warranty on the product, and who honors that guarantee?
  • Under what circumstances can you exercise your warranty rights?
Need to return merchandise, so be sure to check the Store's site for Cancellation and Return Policies:
  • Who pays for shipping?
  • Is there a time limit or other restrictions on the return or cancellation?
  • Is there a restocking or other charges if you need to cancel or return the order?
  • Do you get a store credit or a full refund of your charges to your credit card?
  • If the Store only offers store credits, find out if there is a time restriction.
Don't expect less Customer Service just because a Store operates over the Internet.

Identity Theft - Things you need to Know!
Never Give Out A Social Security Number

Your Social Security Number is never a requirement for placing an order at any Store. There is no need for the Store to ask for it ever, by any means - email, phone, etc. Giving out your Social Security Number (SSN) could lead to having your identity stolen. There are more cases of identity theft committed over the Internet than ever before. Much of it can be avoided by following some simple rules. Identity thieves like to obtain their victims' identifying information using low-tech means like dumpster diving, mail theft, or workplace access to Social Security Numbers. They are increasingly using the web to apply for new credit cards and to purchase goods and services in their victims' names. The same advice for avoiding low-tech identity theft applies to shopping on the Internet. Most important - Be aware of who you are buying from and use credit cards for purchases. Check your credit card bills carefully for several months and look for purchases you did not make. If you find some, immediately contact the credit card company and file a dispute claim.Get A Free Credit Report Yearly

Consider obtaining your free credit reports at least once a year and check for accounts that have been opened without your permission.Buy A Shredder

Protect yourself from some of the low-tech thefts of identity by purchasing a shredder and shred all credit card applications you receive in the mail and any other documents that contain personal identifying information.E-Mail Requests for Identifying Information

E-Mail addresses provided to anyone, including Stores can be compromised and fall into the hands of Identity Thieves. Identity Thieves send emails to Internet users that ask them to update the account information for their banks, credit cards, online payment service, or popular shopping Stores. The email may state that your account information has expired, been compromised or lost and that you need to immediately resend it to the company.

Some emails sent as part of massive "phishing" expeditions often containing links to official-looking web pages. Other times the emails ask the consumer to download and submit an electronic form. Beware - statistics state that as many as five percent of recipients respond to them, becoming victims of financial loss, identity theft, and other crimes. Never reply to an E-Mail that requests for any type of identifying information, unless you validate the URL - Uniform Resource Locator. The URL can be checked to verify that the address, you are dealing with is the correct company. The URL is usually the above the web site at the top of your screen in a rectangular window that contains the web site address. You should verify this address when conducting any financial matters.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) - OnGuard Online
We are a firm believer in the philosophy of "Absolute Privacy and Anonymous Shopping". We will do our very best to represent only reputable Stores. Our administrators are committed to ensuring that every shopping trip that our Customers take online is enjoyable & safe. To further emphasize our commitment, although some redundant information is included, the following comments from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are presented.

It's no secret that browsing and buying online can save you time, money, and effort. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, says shoppers who stop and think before they click can prevent an online Scrooge from interfering with their purchases and ultimately, their holiday fun.

The FTC and the technology industry recently launched "OnGuard Online", a campaign to help consumers integrate online safety into their daily online routines. The agency says that consumers who take a few precautions when they're online can help minimize the chances of a mishap. Among the tips from OnGuard Online are:

Know Who You're Dealing With

Anyone can set up shop online. Confirm an online seller's physical address and phone number in case you need to get in touch with them. If you get an email or pop-up message from the seller while you're browsing that asks for financial information, don't reply or click on the link in the message. Legitimate companies don't ask for this information via email or pop-ups.Read Between The Lines

Read the seller's description of the product closely, especially the fine print. Words like "refurbished", "vintage", or "close-out" may indicate that the product is in less-than-mint condition; name-brand items with "too good to be true" prices could be counterfeits.Pay By Cerdit Or Charge Card

Do not send cash under any circumstances. If you pay by credit or charge card online, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. Under this law, you have the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment while the creditor is investigating. In the event your credit or charge card is used without your knowledge and permission, you generally are liable for no more than $50 in charges per card. Many companies do not hold consumers responsible for any unauthorized charges made online, and some card issuers may provide additional warranty, return, and/or purchase protection benefits.Check Out The Terms Of The Deal

Understand refund policies and delivery dates. Can you return the item for a full refund? If you return it, who pays the shipping costs or restocking fees? Check on when you can expect to receive your order. The law requires sellers to ship items as promised or within 30 days after the order date if no specific date is promised. Can the recipient return your gift? If so, ask that a gift receipt be included in the package.Keep A Paper Trail

Print and save records of your online transactions, including the product description and price, the online receipt, and copies of any email you exchange with the seller. Read your credit card statements as you receive them to be on the lookout for unauthorized charges.Don't Email Your Financial Information

Email is not a secure method of transmitting financial or personal information like your credit card, checking account, or Social Security number. If you begin a transaction and want to provide your financial information through an organization's website, look for indicators that the site is secure, like a lock icon on the browser's status bar or a URL for a website that begins "https:" (the "s" stands for "secure"). Unfortunately, no indicator is foolproof; some fraudulent sites have forged security icons.Use Anti-Virus Software And A Firewall

Update your Anti-Virus and Firewall regularly. Anti-virus software protects your computer from viruses that can destroy your data, slow your computer's performance, cause a crash, or even allow spammers to send email through your account. It scans your computer and incoming email for viruses, deleting them. Your anti-virus software should update routinely with antidotes to the latest "bugs" circulating through the Internet. Firewalls help keep hackers from using your computer to send out your personal information without your permission. Think of a firewall as a guard, watching for outside attempts to access your system and blocking communications to and from sources you don't permit. If your operating system doesn't include a firewall, get a separate software firewall, or install a hardware firewall - an external device that includes firewall software.Check A Company's Privacy Policy

Check the Privacy Policy before doing business. It should let you know what personal information the website operators are collecting, why, and how they're going to use it. If you can't find a privacy policy - or if you can't understand it - consider taking your business to another site that's more security-conscious and customer-friendly.
